OUR ROOTS
From Women in Music Festival to Women Sound Off…
We began our journey in 2017 under the name, “WOMEN IN MUSIC FESTIVAL”—convinced that we’d only be functioning as a festival. With a small team of three, we put on 11 events across downtown Oakland, CA, with 700+ festival goers who were as new to the experience as we were. In 2018, with a small team of five and 15+ amazing volunteers, our all-women team put on the second annual “WOMEN IN MUSIC FESTIVAL”—where over 1200+ attendees joined us.
10% of our attendees traveled from out of state, while 14% of California attendees traveled from Los Angeles to participate in 2018. Women across creative and non-creative fields, along with male allies, found common energy, inspiration, and joy in the Women in Music spirit. As we listened and learned, we realized that our platform had quickly become a tool for women from all industries, year-round. So, we decided to expand that same energy and change our name to “Women Sound Off” on September 28, 2018.
We’re still championing women in music and media with the same energy as before. However, our unique community includes so many incredible women from different fields who deserve to sound off too.
